A father’s struggle

image
I struggle with finding a way to teach my kids and teach my family to live to their full potential.
I struggle that they will be humble honest down-to-earth and have a fire to live to see the world through their own eyes.
I struggle for them not to be consumers but creators.
Givers not takers.
To add value to the community.
I struggle to be a father that expects the best and not force my own ideology onto them.
I struggle to be patient when tears roll down their cheeks because crying has never solved anything even though I’ll cry with the sappy a commercial/movie.
I struggle that they will use their minds to build and create and nurture and love and be a family together wherever their own path leads them.
How do I instill our values beliefs and traditions for when are gone they still have us?

Sit in Silence

Take the time to sit in silence. Tried to clear your mind. Clear your heart. Disconnect from what you think is important and get back to what is essential in your life. This is harder to do than you would think and I’m still struggling on how to make a regular practice of meditation and will use any and all techniques available. Remember that as soon as I thought pops into your mind release it. Concentrate on the space between your breath see the air traveling through your body filling your lungs. Inhale. Exhale. Meditate to find yourself. Meditate for peace in yourself. Meditate for clarity.

Big brother

No one like him
Big and broad
A protector
Father figure to many
Big brother is he
For those even not his blood
He’ll give for you and me
And has
Become more than just a brother
But a true valued friend
Best of both worlds
We got in him
Level headed leader
Taking care of so much
A weight heavy that only he will bear
If only he’d ask so many will be there
To lighten his load like he lightens
Our hearts
We got the best deal
With you for the lead

Tus manos

Gracias mami por tus manos
Las Que nos ensienaron a comer, a conocer
Cojimos nuestra primer paso de bajos de ellas
Aprendimos a escribrir, a vestir, y a rezar
Tus manos
nos dirigían hasta cuando nos lo sabíamos…
Ayudandos, apoyandonos

Que importa / Who cares

No importa quien eres
Ni quien vas hacer
Solo me importa quién eres en éste momento
Paso a paso
Mano a mano
Con los dedos enlazado
Estamos en el momento
Nada importa de lo que fue
No nos vamos a preocupar por
Lo que talves será
Solo caminas con migo
Ahora
El tiempo vas y viene
Cada instante pasa
Por eso es que los segundo
Son tan valioso
Recuérdate de solo una cosa
Que es este momento
El que importa

Now in English…
“Who Cares”
It doesn’t matter who you are
Nor who you shall be
The only thing that matters to me
Is who you are now, in this moment
Step by step
Hand in hand
Fingers enlaced
We are in the moment
The past matters not
And we shall not worry
Of what might be
Just walk with me
In the Now
Time comes and goes
Each instant it passes
Thats why the seconds are worth so much
Just remember one thing
It is Now that only matters

Invest in you

Where are you investing in yourself?

You spend countless of hours and money making sure your kids go to the right school, get great coaching, and challenge them daily.  However, where are you doing this for yourself?  Because in order for your kids to reach their full potential you must become the best version of yourself.

Without a doubt they can get there without ever seeing you improving, struggling, and overcoming.  Now just imagine how much easier for them it would be if you can transfer that knowledge you’ve gained in your experiences just from investing in yourself.

There are countless books, podcasts, coaches, seminars, and conferences that you can use to your benefit to help you achieve your goals.  But your desire to improve and invest in yourself must be greater than just consuming the information.  Investing in yourself takes self motivated action.

Words for my escape

I would write on anything
That I thought was mine
From napkins, to scrap, to cardboard
Anything that came to mind
Words would flow easily
They weren’t hard to mine
Pen to paper was my escape
Filling journals, notebooks, & pads
As I mapped my mind’s landscape
The freedom found was like no other
And I relish the time of ink stained palms
Only now wanting for the same written calm

I wrote the above poem when Isabella was in 2nd grade and she didn’t believe I liked writing poetry.  This was almost on a challenge from her to me to see if I really could write something off the top of my head.  I remember we had a great conversations about poems and how words can be used in so many different ways.  Poem was originally written on 04-07-2011.  I hope you enjoyed it.

Comfortable with the uncomfortable

When you’re feeling uncomfortable that’s when you know that you are taking on what’s important. That feeling of uneasiness, of wanting to jump out of your skin and crawl under a rock.  Or clean dishes and tidy up the room that is the moment you need to face what is making you uncomfortable. You see your mind is just looking for a place to escape it wants to draw your attention to something else that needs to be done. But the work that really needs to be done is that which is making you uncomfortable. When you begin to recognize that uncomfortableness that you just can’t stand and you actually do the work get in its faceand overcoming you will never be uncomfortable again in that same situation because your subconscious would have remembered how you were able to surpass it in the past. So face your fears get comfortable with the uncomfortable and see how great it is on the other side.

Give thanks

Take a moment now and give thanks for all that you have and all that you don’t. You’re lucky to be you are no matter what going on in the world.
6 feet above is always better than 6 feet below. Take a moment and think about the first time you rode your bike with no training wheels without falling all or waking up Christmas morning to find just what you asked Santa for.  Think a happy thought live it, taste it, feel it.  Be grateful for the moment you have right now.
